The Costa Rica Digital Nomad Program grants an initial stay of one year (12 months), with the option to renew for an additional year. Digital nomads are exempt from income tax in Costa Rica and may also waive customs taxes on telecommunications and electronic devices necessary for remote work, subject to conditions. Work is restricted to remote employment for entities or clients outside of Costa Rica; local employment is not permitted. Mandatory medical insurance is required, covering the full duration of the stay with a minimum coverage of USD $50,000. This policy can be from an international provider or a Costa Rican firm regulated by the Office of the Superintendent General for Insurance. For families, the minimum income requirement is $5,000 per month, and all dependents must also be covered by medical insurance and pay the individual application fee. Other benefits include the ability to open a national bank account and validation of the home country's driver's license. All required application documents must be translated into Spanish by an official translator.
